Sometimes, and more so following a break up, the hardest person to love is yourself. Yet if you can’t find a way to love yourself, how can you expect someone else to do it?

When you’re in a loving relationship its easy to believe all the good things about yourself. You feel positive and confident in your ability to love and be loved. Unfortunately, when a relationship breaks up, those beliefs can be ripped apart alongside your heart.

One of the best ways to start loving yourself again is to use the power of your mind to reinforce the positive images and beliefs you held about yourself prior to the break up. Affirmations are statements that we use everyday, knowingly or not.

In learning to love yourself, you have to make a conscious effort to use the positive affirmations that will reinforce the belief that you are loveable and worthy and willing to be loved. Seems simple, and I admit, that when you’re in the throes of a break up it’s not the easiest thing to do. But you are worth loving and so you are worth taking a few minutes out of your day to remind yourself of that fact.

One of my favourite affirmations actually comes from the L’oreal ads.

Because I’m Worth It

Simple and to the point, it reminds me that I am worth anything and everything I want. And that includes Love.

Affirmations work by using mind power to influence our thoughts and feelings. In turn this influences our actions and behaviours, which ultimately affects the way we are seen and treated by those around us in our daily lives.

So how do you use them to start learning to love yourself again?

You can opt for ‘ready made’ affirmations such as the following examples:

I know that I deserve Love and accept it now

All my relationships are loving and harmonious

I choose love, joy and freedom, open my heart and allow wonderful things to flow into my life

I know that I deserve Love and accept it now

Write down your positive affirmations and place them where you will be able to see them regularly, in the bathroom, beside your bed, on the door of the fridge, the dashboard of your car…. the more you come across these affirmations and remind yourself of them, the sooner you will begin to accept them as fact.

If you prefer, compose your own affirmations. I personally believe this is much more likely to lead to tangible results because they will be statements that resonate with you on a much deeper level.

The power of the mind is proven to influence us in more ways than we will probably ever know. Remember to use it to focus on the things that you do want, not the things you don’t.
